Of course if you root your phone then no doubt the various forums around the web will have Android 2.2 firmware builds to install. It is unclear at the moment when other Android smartphones will get these updates, but we expect over the coming months that once the update has been announced, updates to other devices will happen a few months after that.

Google Nexus One owners first off followed possibly by DROID although speculation also says the N1 and DROID could get a roll out at the same time. These updates should allow developers to access better graphics capabilities specifically on the Google Nexus One.

Recent news of ebook apps now exceeding the number of games on platforms like Apple’s iPhone and iPod. According to Mobclix, there are more than 27,000 app-based books available on Apple’s App Store, with games falling behind at 25,400, and entertainment at a distant third place of 17,164.

The smartphone ebook and book application trend seems to be picking up steam, with the number of ebooks outnumbering games almost two-to-one over the last month. This trend is almost certain to continue with the upcoming release of Apple’s new iPad tablet reader and dedicated online book store.

According to Appstoreapps, the top paid books on the Apple App Store are as follows:

Dr. Seuss’s ABC (Oceanhouse Media) – A time-honored classic now comes to the iPhone platform, featuring professional narration, background audio, and enlarge scene artwork. This title is designed to promote reading in young children as well as entertain.

iReading: The Lion and The Mouse (AppleTreeApp) – This title comes packed with exquisite pictures, narration and animation from some of the best illustrators around the world. This ebook includes both new and classic fairy tales to provide children with an exciting reading experience.

Free Books (Spreadsong, Inc). – According to its publisher, ‘Free Books’ claims to offer “23,469 classics for less than a cup of coffee.” As quoted from their website, “[Spreadsong] takes 23,469 classic books, packages them up, and makes them available to download and read with [their] fully featured e-reader.” These classics all fall within the public domain, with titles such as Victorian novels, Shakespeare’s plays, and the autobiographies of Ben Franklin and Andrew Carnegie.

Classics (Andrew Kaz & Phill Ryu) – This e-book application is a collection of over a dozen hand-picked, literary masterpieces, with new additions like “Through the Looking-Glass”, “The Odyssey”, and “The Art of War.”

Dr. Seuss’s The Cat in the Hat (Oceanhouse Media) – The Dr. Seuss classic “The Cat in the Hat”, one of the top selling children’s books of all time, now comes to the iPhone/iPod Touch platforms.

Kindle for iPhone (Amazon.com) – Kindle, Amazon’s ebook format of choice, now finds its way to the iPhone/iPod platform. Audiobooks – (Cross Forward Consulting, LLC) – Audiobook showcases over 2,800 classic audiobooks at no cost to readers. These free audiobooks provide free access to over 20,000 hours worth of audiobook content, including options like automatic bookmarking, sleep timers, and advanced searches.

101 Classic Novels – (Publish This, LLC) – This title is exactly what it claims to be, an ebook application of 101 classic novels including favorites like “Flatland”, “Little Women”, “Emma”, “Mansfield Park”, and “Northanger Abbey”

Stanza (Lexcycle) – Stanza is a revolutionary ebook application offering one of the best reading interfaces in its class. It has received outstanding reviews from Time Magazine, Forbes, and Wired. It is featured as one of the top three Apple favorites in the store’s “App Store Turns 1″ celebration. If you’re reading this, you probably already know all about the Dreambox, one of the most popular lines of digital television series ever to be produced.

Given all the fuss over these digital receivers being remotely controlled by an iPhone, owners of smartphones powered by Windows Mobile are probably feeling left out in the cold right about now. Is there any way to make Windows Mobile-based mobile phones remotely control a Dreambox as well?

“What in the world is a Dreambox?” you still may ask.

Okay, a quick review of the Dreambox reveals it to be a highly-popular series of Linux-based set-top box receivers for DVB satellite and cable digital television channels. These Linux tuners even support terrestrial television (that means your standard plain-jane TV channels, for you non-technical folks out there). It was originally produced by Dream Multimedia, a German multimedia company. The Dreambox series used Linux-based software originally developed for DBox2, another Linux tuner. The DBox2 was originally distributed by KirchMedia, another German company that has since gone “kaputt” due to a bankruptcy. The bankruptcy was a boon to Linux geeks worldwide, as it flooded the market with unsold Dreamboxes available for hobbyist tinkering. The low-cost Dreambox hardware makes Digital Video Broadcasting (DVB) available on a shoestring budget.

The Dreambox hardware supports remote LAN and WAN access through its built-in Ethernet port, making it available for a multitude of tasks wherever you may be (work, home, on the road, etc.). Examples of activities you can perform remotely include:

• handling timer-events (i.e., recording a TV show)
• EPG viewing
• remote unit wake up
• channel changing
• other remote control features

Okay, so the Dreambox hardware itself supports remote control features, but how do you make your Windows Mobile smartphone actually perform the duties of the remote control itself? Although it’s currently in beta testing (version 0.6 being the latest release), there are no known bugs so far. It has so far been tested on the HTC HD2 with IPBox350, DM7000 and DM800. A separate version of WMDreamRemote for devices with a 320 x 240 screen resolution has also been released. Future releases plain to integrate
detailed EPG information, better timer management, remote reboot/standby/power-off capabilities, sending SMS messages to the TV screen, and improved error-handling.

Out of all the Dreambox tools out there, for Windows Mobile fans this is the one to have, it makes DVB Linux via remote control easier than waking up for work or school in the morning. WMDreamRemote actually runs on any Enigma-based Linux tuner, so even if you decide to trash your Dreambox you’re not stuck with a smart-phone-app you can’t use.

Just download the app from the xda website and get started turning your smartphone into a full-fledged Dreambox remote control. (need to register to get to these links but it is free)

You’re “good to go” as long as your Windows Mobile-based smartphone has the Compact .NET 2.0 Framework installed. Gone are the days of missing out on your favorite TV program just because you forgot to set your Dreambox timer before leaving the house. When it comes to remote controlling your Dreambox or other Enigma-based Linux tuner, Windows Mobile addicts are no longer left out in the cold.

WMDreamRemote is bound to make other smartphone owners jealous. What’s next, a Dreambox remote control Android app? Maybe one for the Blackberry or Palm Pre? We’ll just have to wait and see…

Pulse mini introduced at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona by T-Mobile UK

A tiny version of the T-Mobile Pulse with a 2.83 QVGA resistive display isn’t an exciting news for the gadget geeks.

The most important thing to know is, that it will be shipped with Android 2.1 .
