Gartner: smartphone sales up 47 percent, mobile phone sales down 3 percent

The third quarter numbers from Gartner reveals an increase in smartphone sales worldwide. Android has increased its lead over other platforms at the expense of RIM and Symbian. However, worldwide sales of mobile phone declined. As expected, Samsung, Nokia and Apple were the top vendors with a combined market share of almost half of all mobile phone units sold.

  • According to the Gartner report, smartphone sales in the third quarter experienced an increased by 47% over the same period last year. However, mobile phone sales dropped by 3% over the same period last year.
  • Samsung is still the top mobile phone vendor in the quarter with a market share of 22.9%, which is up from 18.7% from the same period last year. Nokia took the second spot with 19.2% market share, down from 23.9% from the same period last year. Apple placed third with 5.5% market share.
  • Android is still the dominating smartphone platform in the third quarter with an imposing 72.4% market share, which is up from 52.5% from the same period last year. Based on the figures, it appears that Android’s rise comes with the expense of RIM and Symbian.
  • Symbian’s market share for the quarter took a nose dive from 16.9% in 3Q of 2011 to 2.6% for this quarter. RIM also experienced a significant drop from 11% in 3Q of 2011 to 5.3% for this quarter.
  • iOS took second spot in the smartphone race with 13.9% market share, which is slightly down from 15% from the same period last year.
