Smartphone sales boost Samsung Q2 profit

Backed by its robust smartphone sales, Samsung Electronics has set a record second quarter net profit. With the strong demand of the Samsung Galaxy S III, Samsung almost doubled the total smartphone shipment of close competitor Apple.

In the Q2 of 2012 which ended on June 30, Samsung has earned overall net profit of $4.5 billion, a 48 percent increase from Q2 of last year. The company’s mobile business has contributed 63 percent of the total operating profit.
According to analysts, Samsung has shipped around 52 million smartphones in the quarter. Meanwhile, Apple has shipped 26 million iPhones.
Looking ahead in Q3, Samsung revenue may slow down a bit due to patent disputes against Apple and the weakening demand of smartphones in Europe.
